Cruz Manila – The Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP) held its 2017 Presidents’ Convention with the participation of the Department of National Defense (DND) and the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO). This assembly opened the door for new resolutions and suggestions from VFP’s District Presidents led by Col. Bonifacio de Gracia, acting president of the VFP.
DND Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana led the significant event with PVAO Deputy Administrator MGen. Raul S. Caballes AFP (Ret) and Veterans Affairs and Management Division (VAMD) Chief MGen. Alfredo S. Cayton Jr. AFP(Ret). The convention, which used to be termed as “Supreme Council Meeting” is held every May and November annually. Among the convention’s goals are to discuss specific topics and confirm all approved resolutions of the organization.
For this particular convention, improvements and increases on VFP’s existing benefits were discussed. This include: Burial Assistance,from P5,000 to P10,000; Medical Assistance, from P3,000 to P5,000; and the provision of Educational Assistance and Livelihood Programs.
In his speech, Sec. Lorenzana said that DND will ensure thatPVAO will continuously engage in partnership with the veteran leaders,veterans’ organizations, and other stakeholders to intensify campaign effortsin bringing our veterans and dependents under the VFP. “The solution,therefore, to many of your problems does not lie on the veterans alone nor on the government alone. Rather, my friends, it must be a joint effort – a partnership between government and the veterans,” quoting the words of former President Carlos P. Garcia.
